Murray on Foligno, Stamkos and trading up

The Buffalo Sabres held a pre-draft press conference Tuesday morning to discuss some plans the Sabres have on free agent negotiations and draft strategies.

General manager Tim Murray stated that it’s unlikely he will try to move up in the draft.

Murray also said that the Sabres have their selection narrowed down to three players. If anyone else ranked higher than them is available at that point, than it’s just a moment. Murray stated that a left-handed, top defenseman is the number one need.

As far as upcoming free agents, Murray said they have talked to Zemgus Girgensons, Rasmus Ristolainen and Jake McCabe. They have not yet talked with Marcus Foligno or Chad Johnson.

Murray was asked about the latest Steven Stamkos rumors and he replied by saying that they haven’t even discussed an offer for him internally.

He also commented on Jimmy Vesey and still intends to recruit him and eventually sign with the team:

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
