Eichel nets OT winner

Jack Eichel’s overtime goal helped the Sabres open their preseason with a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night at Pegula Ice Arena. Eichel hit a post earlier in the overtime but beat Tristan Jarry on a breakaway to cap the win.

While the win was good to see, the Sabres coughed up a 4-1 lead to begin the third period, and the Penguins were right back in a new game.

Buffalo outshot Pittsburgh 38-12 on the night.

Carter Hutton started the game in goal but didn’t see much work. In fact, he saw just two shots in the first period and would finish the game with a pair of saves on three shots. Jonas Johansson finished the game in net, allowing three goals on nine shots.

The Penguins’ Andrew Agozzino opened the scoring, but it was new acquisition John Gilmour who scored the first of four straight Buffalo goals.

Conor Sheary, Henri Jokiharju, and Tage Thompson each tallied a goal to put Buffalo in front, 4-1.

The Sabres are right back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
