This NHL season has been unpredictable so far to say the least. Here are some thoughts as to what has been going on with the Sabres.
Buffalo are currently ranked 27th in the NHL with just seven points through 10 games. Derek Roy has been the hottest player on the team, scoring 11 points (5G, 6A) to begin the season.
Thomas Vanek has recently picked up the pace. It felt like forever waiting for him to score his first of the season, but now he has four in as many games.
It’s frustrating to see Tyler Myers’ inconsistency thus far. Hopefully, he’ll improve to the Calder-winning guy we all know and love.
Why is Craig Rivet captain of this team? As soon as he was traded here, the “C” was put on his jersey. He has not proved (to me, anyway) that he deserves to be captain of this team. Yea, he is an experienced veteran, but he has been playing horrible, and can’t keep the puck in the zone to save his life.
What is up, Steve Montador? I have not been a fan of Montador ever since the Sabres signed him. I have gotten into arguments over how bad he is. One month into the season, the Boston Bruins reject has been playing pretty well for the Sabres. He has six points (1G, 5A) and a plus 8 on the season so far.
I have to admit that his goal in the game against Philadelphia was very nice. Regardless of his success so far, he still makes some bad plays. It seems that he always ends up behind his own net, just waiting there. Then when he is finally ready, he will try to make this long pass all the way past center ice, which usually remains untouched and the opposing team gets the puck.
Or, we will get to see the classic Montador fall in front of the net. Well, here. I will just show you what I am talking about:
Go to the 7:21 mark.
Now, go to the 6:31 mark. This is not as bad, but still resulted in a goal.
We’ll see how Montador plays for the rest of the season. If he keeps up this up, I may have no choice but to like him a bit more.

It seems like Lindy Ruff’s style is becoming stale. There is no motivation on this team, anymore. There is no heart. The Sabres have been in close games, but there doesn’t seem to be enough desperation to try and tie them up in the final minutes.
At this point, I’m thinking that both Ruff and Darcy Regier need to go. This team needs to start fresh and get something different happening.
