Sabres Set to Take on Anaheim in Opener

The Sabres are set to begin the new season today against Anaheim. It is 165 days since the devastating defeat knocked Buffalo out of postseason play. Buffalo are looking for revenge and are not the same underdogs they were last season. Other teams have started to take notice, but will this team live up to its new expectations?

Finally, the new season is here, and the Sabres have a much different look than last season. Robyn Regehr, Christian Ehrhoff and Ville Leino will all make their debut for the blue and gold. Buffalo parted ways with Mike Grier, Patrick Lalime, Rob Niedermayer and Tim Connolly.

Jason Pominville will be wearing the “C” permanently, with Thomas Vanek, Drew Stafford, Derek Roy and Paul Gaustad all serving as assistants.

Today’s game will begin the first full season of the Pegula era. However, the Sabres have had a tough against Anaheim lately, losing four of the last five. The Sabres won the lone meeting last year in what was the only win Miller has recorded against the Ducks.

Anaheim will be starting Jonas Hiller, who went 26-16-3 last season with a 2.56 goals against. He is also a perfect 2-0 against Buffalo, but has a GAA of 3.00

This will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Sabres will head to Anaheim on Wednesday, February 29th as part of a five game west coast road trip.

Today’s game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
