What We Learned From March

It was a busy month of March, and although it ended with a pair of losses, it took an improbable run to get Buffalo back into the playoff race. The Sabres even controlled their own destiny with four games remaining in the season, but losses to Pittsburgh and Toronto gave way for Washington to jump two points ahead.

The Sabres went 10-4-2 during the month of March, and moved into 8th place at one point, before falling a spot.

It was arguably the Sabres best month of the season, but late leads and losses against the league’s worst teams kept the Sabres from a playoff spot.

There were still some positives to take from the month of March, even if the Sabres don’t make the playoffs. The future talent of this team is evident and exciting.

Sabres fans got to witness the Foligno leap, as Marcus was called up and appeared in 11 games. In that span, Marcus Foligno earned 11 points (6 G, 5 A) and a plus 9 rating.

Injuries have really been a problem this season and with Tyler Myers and Christian Ehrhoff both missing time, the Buffalo blueline is struggling. The Sabres have surpassed 300 man games lost to injury, the highest since the stat has been kept track of since the 1998-99 season. Jason Pominville is the only player to appear in every game for the Sabres this season.

The Sabres have just three games left in the regular season, and although the postseason is unlikely, Buffalo turned its season around and made an impressive run.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
