Winter Classic back in Buffalo?

Winter Classic

With the recent news of the Sabres hosting the IIHF in 2018, there have been rumblings of another big event potentially returning.

Terry and Kim Pegula have discussed getting the NHL to have Buffalo host a Winter Classic in 2018. The Sabres hosted their first one in 2008, when Pittsburgh defeated them in a shootout. A second one in 2018 would allow them to celebrate the ten year anniversary.

The NHL has not even announced the 2017 Winter Classic, which is believed to be hosted by Toronto for the Maple Leafs’ 100th season.

Here are the results of since 2008:

2008 Ralph Wilson Stadium Penguins Sabres 2–1 (SO)
2009 Wrigley Field Red Wings Blackhawks 6–4
2010 Fenway Park Flyers Bruins 1–2 (OT)
2011  Heinz Field Capitals Penguins 3–1
2012 Citizens Bank Park Rangers Flyers 3–2
2014 Michigan Stadium Maple Leafs Red Wings 3–2 (SO)
2015 Nationals Park Blackhawks Capitals 2–3
2016 Gillette Stadium Canadiens Bruins

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
