Report: New offsides rule

While you watch hockey this season, it might help you to be aware of a new offsides rule that can come into play. For the past few years, we’ve seen teams challenge that a play was offsides, which has wiped out goals.

Now, when a team has an unsuccessful offsides challenge, they will be awarded a two-minute penalty.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported the new infraction:

“Can you imagine a team in a tight game giving up a goal it thought was offside, losing the challenge, then having to withstand an immediate power-play opportunity? It’s going to make bench bosses much more wary.” – Friedman

What do you think of this new rule? Let us know in the comments below.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
