Johansson wins it in OT

The Sabres looked like the much better team on Wednesday night in a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. That may be because Columbus put a nearly full AHL team on the ice for the game, but Buffalo controlled the play for the last two periods.

After controlling the puck for nearly the entire overtime period, Marcus Johansson walked in on a two-on-one with Jeff Skinner and buried a shot past Blue Jackets’ goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.

The game wouldn’t have needed overtime if it weren’t for former Sabre Nathan Gerbe, who tied the game with just under two minutes to play in the third period. He also opened the scoring early in the first period.

Victor Olofsson scored his third goal of the preseason on a wicked one-timer.

Sam Reinhart and Tage Thompson scored the other two Buffalo goals.

Carter Hutton played the entire game, allowing three goals on 25 shots. It’s expected that Linus Ullmark will get the nod in goal when the Sabres take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at 4 p.m. That will be Buffalo’s final preseason game.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
