Sabres Host Carolina in Home Opener

It’s been a week since the Sabres last played a game, but they make their return to the First Niagara Center tonight to host the Carolina Hurricanes.

There have been a number of upgrades and improvements to the arena over the summer and many fans will see most of them for the first time. On the ice, the Blue and Gold will be looking for its third consecutive win to begin the season.

The undefeated start has many reminiscing back to the 2006-2007 season, where the Sabres won their first 10 games.  The whole Sabres fan base and organization are pumped up for this game. The atmosphere hasn’t been this electric since the 06-07 season and for good reason.

The Sabres will be facing a Carolina team that has gone 1-2-1 to start the season, allowing 15 goals in four games. Jeff Skinner leads the Hurricanes with five points (1 G, 4 A), while Vanek has just as many (2 G, 3 A) in half as many games played.

The last four meetings between these two teams have all been decided by one goal, each team winning once in overtime and once in regulation. In a game against Carolina last year, Sabres fans witnessed what has become the infamous Jhonas Enroth helmet-less save (as pictured above).

With only four teams in action tonight, the Sabres can remain atop the Northeast Division with at least a point against Carolina. After tonight’s game the Sabres will head to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
