Heading into the game, the USA was aware that they had to be careful when playing against Switzerland. While the Swiss may not have a lot of star players, they are certainly capable of winning because of hard work.
Team USA came out flying, putting five shots on net in the first two minutes. At the end of the period, the United States led 18-4 in shots on goal.
Swiss goaltender Jonas Hiller stopped all 18 shots to keep the game scoreless after one. The Americans continued to fire shots on net throughout the game. After two periods of play there was still no score.
The U.S. thought it had scored twice, but both goals were disallowed. One due to a penalty and the other because time expired. Zach Parise scored the only two goals of the game, one of them an empty netter to close out the game.
The U.S. finished with 44 shots, while the Swiss finished with 19. Ryan Miller earned his first shutout in the tournament, allowing five goals in just four games.
USA’s next game will be on Friday when they will play the winner of the Czech Republic and Finland game.
