Jeanneret to return for 2013-’14 season

200x300-RickJeanneretWith another year remaining on his contract, Buffalo Sabres play-by-play man, Rick Jeanneret, said he intends to return to the broadcast booth next season.

Jeanneret’s tenure with Buffalo began in 1971, and the 70-year-old plans to continue through the 2013-’14 season.

“I’m doing pretty good for an old guy,” said Jeanneret. “I have 70-year-old aches and pains.”

While Jeanneret did call all but four games this past season, he probably won’t call them all for the next one. Jeanneret usually takes off for West coast trips and sometimes back-to-back nights. Still, Sabres fans will get to continue hearing him announce games on television and the radio.

“I don’t know how many games I am going to do,” said Jeanneret. “I’ll do most of them.”

Of course, Jeanneret is still hoping for one final item to add to his resumè.

“I’m hoping that before I leave, I can get ahold of that Stanley Cup,” Jeanneret said during his induction speech for the Buffalo Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame. “I would truly love to have that happen. That would be the culmination of 40-some-odd years in this business.”

His retirement has been rumored for the past few seasons, but he has agreed to come back each time.

“I’m not going to go on forever,” he says. “Wherever I’ll be when I’m done, I know I can sit back and think upon those good times.”

Actually, with only one year left on his contract shouldn't they trade him while he still has value? The longer they wait the lower the value, right? By the trade deadline he'll just be a rental.

Rick needs to remain play-by-play in Buffalo as long as he can. he is the voice of the Buffalo Sabres, as was Ted Darling (RIP).

Love Rick, but I may have to jump ship on this franchise soon... I thought Pegula was supposed to turn this town around. Instead it s the same old same old. Regier better make some big moves in the off season (yeah, right! Regier big moves, Ha!) or Rick retires after 40 years without a ring, sad really.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
