Grier Signing Is Step One

Six weeks before free agents hit the market, Darcy Regier has locked up Mike Grier for another season with the Sabres. This one move may not seem like a big deal to the NHL. In fact, it wasn’t even listed anywhere on the home page of NHL.com.

This is a solid signing for the Sabres, even though most people knew that it would happen. A few years ago, Grier turned down a contract because he believed Buffalo was heading in the wrong direction, and was he right.

The Sabres failed to make the playoffs two consecutive years after losing Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, and Brian Campbell. Now, Grier likes the situation in Buffalo and is willing to remain on the team, at least for another season.

Hopefully, this signing is just the first of many for the Sabres this Summer. In what could be his final season as General Manager, it is imperative that Regier does everything he can to improved this team.

It isn’t unusual for the Sabres to sit back and only make a few moves here and there. There are numerous team needs with plenty of great players hitting the free agent market on July 1st.

By signing Grier, the Sabres are at least beginning their off-season with a step in the right direction. One thing has been crossed off of the to do list, but plenty of others remain.

I founded Buffalo Hockey Central in 2008 and have poured hours and hours into this site. Luckily, we have a great team of writers and designers who have helped keep this up and running despite a ton of out-of-pocket costs. We do this because we enjoy it, and we're desperate to see the Sabres win the Cup someday, but they have to make the playoffs first.
