O’Reilly caps comeback in Boston

Recap

After trailing by three goals, the Sabres rallied and stunned the Bruins with a 5-4 overtime victory at TD Garden on Saturday night.

Ryan O’Reilly capped the night with the game-winner, which was looked at by the officials. After a review, the ruling was that the Boston defenseman pushed Rasmus Ristolainen into goaltender Anton Khudobin, therefore allowing the goal to count.

“We just went out there and gave everything we had. That was a good win for us tonight. You could see we wanted it. Every guy that touched the puck wanted it. We were confident we were able to win and that was huge for us.” – O’Reilly

The game was tied late in the third as Evander Kane backhanded a loose puck in front. It dribbled off a defenseman and rolled past the goaltender to knot the game at four.

Kyle Okposo nearly gave Buffalo a lead in the dying seconds with a shot that cranked off the crossbar.

Benoit Pouliot registered his first goal of the season, ripping one high glove side as a broken play turned into a one point deficit. Jake McCabe and Sam Reinhart also registered their first assists on the season.

Jason Pominville also found the scoresheet with his fifth goal of the year, with O’Reilly getting a helper.

The third period didn’t reflect Buffalo’s style of play through the first 40 minutes, though.

Boston came out and took control, and it appeared to be just another Sabres game this season.

David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand each recorded a pair of goals for Boston. Pastrnak broke through first, stuffing the puck short side as the defense couldn’t clear the puck out from Robin Lehner’s left pad.

Less than two minutes later, Matt Tennyson committed a horrible interference penalty, which gave the Bruins their first power play of the night.

Johan Larsson won the faceoff in the defensive zone, however Marco Scandella couldn’t get a handle on it. Boston’s finest rat, Marchand, was able to swipe the puck up and beat Lehner point blank glove side just two seconds into the power play.

Lehner earned the victory in goal, stopping 27 of 31 shots. At the other end, Khudobin allowed five goals on 42 shots as he is stepping in for Tuukka Rask, who is day-to-day with an injury.

The Sabres will host Detroit in their next game on Tuesday, and we’ll see if they can carry momentum into that game. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on NBCSN.
