Sabres Reach Double Digits Against Kings
Prior to this game, the Sabres had not scored ten goals in just under 13 years
. At that time, Sabres forward Jason Pominville was 13 years old. Now, he was on the Sabres, and he contributed to the 10-goal barrage by netting three.
Buffalo began to pour it on right out of the gate. Just 1:19 into the game, the Sabres had a two goal lead. With five goals in the first period, Buffalo already had plenty of insurance for the win. Los Angeles would score their lone goal towards the end of the first, coming from Jeff Cowan, who would later play for the Sabres affiliate in Portland.
Jochen Hecht would earn a hat trick in the game, along with Pominville. Hecht finished his in the second period, followed by Pominville, who had a natural hat trick. Dan Paille, Ales Kotalik, Jay Mckee, and Chris Drury netted the other Sabres goals.
Ryan Miller was solid in net, making 32 saves on route to an easy win in front of the home crowd. Hecht finished the game with four points and a plus three on the night.
Mathieu Garon was pulled for Los Angeles. He allowed four goals on ten shots, and was done for the night after the first period. Adam Hauser came in for the Kings, making his NHL debut, didn’t do much better. He allowed six goals on 24 shots as the Sabres continued to pile it on.
The 10 goals were the most the Sabres scored since a 10-7 win over Detroit on Feb 24, 1993. Buffalo’s five-goal first period was the team’s best since scoring five in a 7-1 win over Washington on Dec. 31, 2003. The Sabres scored all types of goal in this game. Buffalo tallied three power play goals, one shorthanded goal, and six at even strength.
Scoring wasn’t the only things the sold out crowd at HSBC arena got to see. Andrew Peters wound up in two fights and received a game misconduct. Sean Avery was also ejected from the game in the third period.
