The Buffalo Sabres started off the first period trading chances back and forth with the Edmonton Oilers. Kyle Okposo was able to capitalize first in the game on a nice deflection goal. This gives Okposo goals in back to back games, nice to have some secondary scoring kick off the action!
The first penalty of the game was killed fairly well by the Sabres PK unit against the Oilers number one rated power-play in the league.
The Sabres squandered yet another power-play chance, terrible showing with the man advantage.
More secondary scoring for the Sabres comes through later in the period. A nice passing play by Asplund, Vesey, and Larsson to finish off the play for a goal.
Another power-play opportunity for the Sabres, as a whole the group looked better this time. With that being said, they need to shoot more and also let a scary short-handed chance against.
The second period started off with a solid penalty kill by the Sabres again. Unfortunately shortly after a defensive breakdown leads to the Oilers first goal, with the score now being 2-1 Sabres.
On a very poor penalty call against Bogosian for “hooking” the Sabres allow a power-play goal against. Ullmark didn’t have a chance on the deflected shot.
The second period for the Sabres left a lot of room for improvement, especially after a strong first.
In the third period Ullmark was tested early, however made a couple of key saves to keep the score tied 2-2.
Vesey misses a golden opportunity on a breakaway, seems like he gets one of these almost every other game.
The period was fairly even overall with chances on both ends, OT will decide the outcome.
The majority of play in the overtime period was controlled by the Sabres with Eichel leading the charge.
Colin Miller was able to score his first goal as a Sabres to earn the team the victory on a nice set up play by Eichel and Johansson.
Eichel extended his point streak to a league leading 13 games. The Sabres were able to hold both McDavid and Draisaitl off the scoresheet, with some puck luck as each of them did hit the post.
A nice way to close out the road trip for both the team and the coach.
Go Sabres!
