For a team riding a miserable losing streak, Monday night’s game proved to be an entertaining one. Buffalo came out on top against the dangerous Washington Capitals after Dominik Kahun scored in the seventh round of a shootout and Linus Ullmark denied Richard Panik.
A 3-2 victory over Washington had Ullmark pumped up in his first game back since his injury. Rasmus Dahlin and Kahun each had a goal in the shootout:

The Sabres can give thanks to Ullmark for this win. Ullmark returned and was very impressive, stopping six of seven in the shootout and 33 of 35 shots.

Buffalo did give up a two-goal lead in the third, and at that point, it looked like the Capitals had all the momentum and might even take the lead in regulation. However, it was the Sabres that actually put one in the net.
Brandon Montour appeared to have scored the goal-ahead late in the third period, but the officials deemed it to be goaltender interference. Here’s the play:

Even though they’re out of contention, it was so nice to finally watch them win a game. Even just hearing the fans during the shootout, they were into it and it’s something we haven’t felt in a while. It’s just a shame they are where they are in the standings.
Buffalo played a very solid first 40 minutes in this one, but Washington has nine come-from-behind wins in the third period this season, so you know it wasn’t going to be easy to finish them off. The Capitals looked much better in the third period, more like themselves. If it weren’t for Ullmark, it could’ve very well been a regulation loss for Buffalo.
The MSG broadcast was all over the fact that Washington takes a lot of penalties, and sure enough, they took a tripping penalty in overtime, but the Sabres couldn’t convert on it.
Interestingly enough, Jeff Skinner was not chosen to shoot in the shootout, but Jimmy Vesey and Marcus Johansson both did.
The Sabres are off until Thursday when they’ll visit the Montreal Canadiens. They’ll follow that up with a home game against the Boston Bruins the next night.
