The world has been hit hard! Little wonder that with many fans having lost out on more than three weeks of regular sports, not many people are talking active sports. Not even the sites offering coupon codes have been spared. Which is weird considering how aggressive most of these websites are.
Instead, the attention has shifted to the novel and deadly Covid-19.
The pandemic’s global map has tilted some and the U.S. now has the largest number of confirmed cases nearing 190,000 with about 3,600 deaths. New York State is the hardest hit in North America with about 75,000 of the confirmed cases and more than 1,000 deaths.
The Sports World Doing Charity During the Crisis
Most sports organizations have marshaled their resources to help their communities cope. The Buffalo Sabres, a premier New York State team are doing their bit the best way they know how. The support is coming both at the team level as well as from individual players.
The Sabres center, Jack Eichel and his teammate, the left-wing Canadian Jeff Skinner, for instance, are using their influence to get the necessary medical and humanitarian assistance. Eichel has roped in Bauer, a hockey paraphernalia manufacturing company to donate masks and protective shields for local hospitals.
Skinner, on the other hand, announced via a post on Instagram that he is giving $53,000 to the newly formed community response fund for Covid-19 serving Western New York.
The health crisis has devastated communities and overwhelmed health facilities, and both Eichel and his sponsor Bauer understand this just so well. The company has shifted its attention to making medical shields following the supply shortage experienced in North America. Already, its Quebec facility has received requests to supply more than a million units.
Bauer reported that because of the enormous orders, they have had to suspend intakes. Instead, they have shared their design and manufacturing instructions with the public hoping that other companies will take the initiative to fill the existing gap.
Other companies that have prioritized making medical supplies are Vaughn Custom Sports and Brian’s Custom Goalie Equipment. Both have put on hold the manufacture of their product portfolio to concentrate on medical gowns.
Eichel understands the lay of the medical emergency environment just so well. His mother serves in the ambulatory surgery department at the Boston Medical Center. His dad, on the other hand, is an invalid recuperating after undergoing a procedure on his shoulder.
In Summary
The whole country is hoping that the coronavirus pandemic will fade away fast. However, before that happens, individuals and communities are coming together to help the most affected. The acts of Eichel and Skinner are a few among the many gestures of kindness that the nation is witnessing.
