Matt Moulson’s two goals weren’t enough for the Islanders to come
away with the win against Buffalo on Sunday.
It took three tries, but the Sabres finally defeated the New York Islanders this season. Tyler Myers scored the game winning goal as the Sabres won 5-3, moving Buffalo up to 10th place in the Eastern Conference.
Buffalo got off to a quick start with a goal by Paul Gaustad just 15 seconds into the game. Rob Niedermayer and Mike Grier assisted on Gaustad’s 5th goal of the season The Islanders came in with a 4-21-4 when they allow the first goal of the game.
The Islanders tied the game on a power play early in the second period. Matt Moulson was all alone in front of the net and knotted the game at one. Minutes later, Tyler Ennis scored his 12th goal of the season, putting the Sabres back in front 2-1. Islanders defenseman Dylan Reese actually knocked the puck past his own goaltender.
After stopping the initial shot on a 3-on-2 rush, Miller was unable to control the rebound. Moulson followed up and scored his second goal of the day, tying the game up at two.
On the power play, Nathan Gerbe accepted a pass from Tyler Ennis and put the Sabres back on top. Just over two minutes later, Buffalo built the lead up to two when Josh Bailey kicked the puck past DiPietro, who was trying to cover the puck. Tyler Myers got credit for the goal, his first in 27 games. Paul Byron earned one of the assists, making that his first career NHL point.
With just over three minutes to go, the Islanders closed within one. Pominville sealed the deal with an empty net goal with 23 seconds left.
Miller earned his 20th win of the season, making it six straight season with at least 20 victories.
