The Sabres are coming off a horrific game against Anaheim where they were unable to contain the high octane offense of the Ducks. Things are not going to get any easier as the Sabres make their way to California to take on another high powered team, the San Jose Sharks. This game marks the beginning of what is going to be a tough road trip, where the Sabres will play San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim over the course of four days.
The last time the Sabres played the Sharks was in March of 2012 in San Jose. Drew Stafford netted the game-winning goal and Ryan Miller recorded a shutout in the 1-0 win.
This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The next coming February 28th, 2014 when the Sharks travel to Buffalo.
Buffalo is off to its worst start in franchise history, posting a 2-13-1 record through the first month of the season.
“We’re facing a lot of adversity right now,” Hodgson said. “We can say as much as we want, but at the end of the day it’s what we do on the ice. Right now it’s not good enough.”
It is fairly obvious to fans and critics that there is a mental problem plaguing this Sabres lineup night in and night out. They have been able to create scoring chances, however have had the hardest time finishing. While this is no excuse, this feeling of helplessness permeates quickly down the ranks and results in the team trying to force plays.
Though there are issues, the Sabres younger core of forwards; most notably Zemgus Girgensons, Brian Flyn, and Johan Larsson have shown that working hard through the tough times is a recipe for success. Whether or not this recipe works tonight is something that remains to be seen.
San Jose is coming off of their first home loss this season and will look forward to tonight’s matchup with the Sabres. The Sharks bolster an all-star offense that is led by Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture, each of which have 13 points early in the season.
Tomas Hertl is also having a great campaign, as he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October; leading rookies with eight goals and three assists. The Sharks will have to rely on this high power offense to beat the likes of Ryan Miller, as he will likely get the start in net tonight.
Tonight’s game will broadcast live on MSG, Bell TV (Ontario) and can be heard as always on WGR 550. Puck drop is at 10:30 p.m.
