Rochester Report: Week 6

Amerks lose to Binghamton at home

After ending last week with two straight wins, the Amerks hosted Binghamton for the second time in as many weeks. With only one game this week, a win would keep them near the top of the North Division. After earning a 4-2 win last week, Rochester was looking for a repeat performance and earn their eighth win of the year.

November 8: vs. Binghamton (L 4-3)

The game started with the Amerks taking control early, as Eric Cornel scored his first of the year just over two minutes into the game. Curtis Lazar doubled his team’s lead with his fourth of the year at the 13:37 mark of the period, and they ended the opening 20 minutes with a 14-5 edge in shots on goal.

The next two periods were dominated by Binghamton, which consisted of a 21-14 edge in shots as well as the Devils scoring three of the final four goals in regulation. Joey Anderson cut their deficit at half with a power-play goal over halfway through the second and gained some momentum entering the final period. Just 45 seconds into the third, Brett Seney, their second-highest leading scorer, tied the game at 2, but Tage Thompson gives Rochester the lead back. With his sixth of the year, he continues to lead the Amerks, with 12 points in 13 games.

However, Seney scored his second of the game to even the game at 3, as they headed into the overtime period. Both teams combined for five shots in the extra frame, but the game went to a shootout as no team put it in the back of the net. While the shootout did not see a goal in its first three rounds, Ben Street netted the game-winner for Binghamton as they earned a 4-3 win over Rochester for their fifth win of the season. Jonas Johansson made 25 saves, as well as three in the shootout, in the start while Hammond traveled with the Sabres to Sweden.

While the Amerks lost in a shootout, they gained a point and with 17 points (7-3-1-2), currently, sit in fourth place in their division, but only sit two points out of the top spot heading into the week. The Amerks play three times this week, with home games against Syracuse (14 pts) and Cleveland (17 pts), and traveling to face Utica (18 pts) for already the third time in this young season. Syracuse, who Rochester has two wins over, is facing early struggles, while Cleveland earned the win in their lone meeting in a shootout. In two trips to Utica, the Amerks and Comets split the matchups. A successful week can place them near the top of the North, as well as jumping ahead of their division rivals.
