Rochester Report: Week 9

Heading into this past week on a five-game winning streak, the Amerks were looking to continue their recent success with two games against division opponents, especially Toronto, who currently leads their division. If not ending the week with seven in a row, a strong week by Rochester would surely keep them near the top of the standings at week’s end.

November 29: vs. Toronto (L 3-2/OT)

In their first meeting against Toronto, the Amerks controlled the game early, which consisted of a 14-8 lead in shots on goal, along with Brett Murray scoring his third of the year at the 13:24 mark of the first. Despite the early Rochester lead, Tanner MacMaster was able to tie the game for the Marlies at 13:18 of the second, but Scott Wilson (6) gave the Amerks the lead back a few minutes later. The first forty minutes concluded with a 2-1 Amerks lead, and a 29-18 advantage in shots for Rochester.

However, the remainder of the game was dominated by Toronto, which included a Darren Archibald power-play goal nearly halfway through the period that evened the score at 2 that sent the game into overtime. Over a minute and a half into the extra frame, Pontus Aberg scored the game-winner for Toronto as they won over Rochester, 3-2. Andrew Hammond made 28 saves in the loss, which they looked to turn around in Cleveland the following day.

November 30: @ Cleveland (W 3-2)

This game got off to a fast start, with Kevin Stenlund scoring 25 seconds into the game that gave Cleveland the lead. However, Andrew Oglevie continued his recent scoring run, with his seventh of the year on the power play, and fifth in sixth games, to tie the game at the 7:58 mark, and the opening period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Oglevie (8) would score his second of the game, and second with the man advantage, just 32 seconds into the period to give the Amerks their first lead of the night. The lead didn’t last long, as Dillon Simpson tied the game five minutes later, and like the first, the second period would end in a tie. Already having a banner night for the Amerks, Oglevie (9) scores at the 4:49 mark of the third for a hat trick and the lead, which they would never relinquish and earned a 3-2 win.

On the second night of a back-to-back, Johansson made the start, stopping 24 of 26 shots faced and continued his solid year, improving to 6-2-2 on the year.

After splitting this weekend, Rochester has 13 wins in 20 games, along with 30 points, one point behind Toronto (33 pts) for the top spot in the North Division. The Amerks will begin a four-game homestand, with three games played this week, which consists of a meeting with Toronto for the second straight week, along with a back-to-back against Charlotte (19 pts) who sit in last in the Atlantic. Although they have remained second in their division, building momentum off their last game could help them in the upcoming home stretch.

One of the most memorable Sabres games I ever attended was the line brawl against the Senators, which Buffalo won in a shootout, 6-5. I can't wait for the day when playoff hockey returns to Buffalo. I graduated with a Masters in Sport Administration, and a Bachelor's in Political Science & Communication Studies from Canisius College.
