Heading into this week with three straight wins last week heading into the All-Star break, the Amerks started the week in second in their division. With only two games following the break this week against division foes Syracuse and Binghamton, the team needs strong play in all areas as they look to get back to the top of the division.

January 31: vs. Syracuse (W 4-2)

Looking to build off their success the week prior, Scott Wilson (8) put the Amerks out front four minutes into the game. However, Daniel Walcott tied the game for Syracuse with a short-handed goal, but Casey Mittlestadt, with his sixth of the year at 8:46, gave Rochester a 2-1 lead after the opening period.

Just 48 seconds into the next period, Wilson, with his second of the night, put the Amerks up two with a power-play goal, and although it did not come until late in the period, the Crunch responded, courtesy of Walcott scoring his second of the game, and first on the power-play.

Only 34 seconds later saw C.J. Smith (9) score to put the Amerks back up two, and despite Syracuse maintaining a lead in shots throughout the game, no goals were scored in the third, and the Amerks won 4-2 for their fourth straight win. Making his third start of the year, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 31 saves for his first win of the season as Rochester continues their strong play.

February 1: @ Binghamton (W 3-2)

While the first period featured a good amount of scoring chances from both teams, Michael McLeod scored with six seconds left in the first to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. Five minutes into the second saw Brett Murray, with his sixth goal, tied the game for Rochester with the man advantage. That would not last, as Marian Studenic gave the Devils back the lead at 6:40 of the period, until Murray tied the game a couple of minutes later for the Amerks with his second of the night.

His goal left the game tied at 2 after forty minutes, along with Rochester holding a 23-22 lead in shots. Just under six minutes into the third, Sean Malone (9) scored what would be the game-winner, as the Amerks won their fifth straight by a score of 3-2.

Andrew Hammond stopped 30 shots in the game for his second straight win as the team continues their ascent up the standings.

This upcoming week, similar to every week, will continue to be crucial, with three games scheduled and two on the road. They start the week traveling to Cleveland (46 pts), before hosting Syracuse (46 pts) on Friday and will travel to Toronto (49 pts) the following day and take on the Marlies. With a record of 26-13-2-4 and 58 points, they remain four points behind Belleville, the Amerks need to continue this as the regular season starts to wind down.

One of the most memorable Sabres games I ever attended was the line brawl against the Senators, which Buffalo won in a shootout, 6-5. I can't wait for the day when playoff hockey returns to Buffalo. I graduated with a Masters in Sport Administration, and a Bachelor's in Political Science & Communication Studies from Canisius College.
