After winning three straight games against divisional opponents, the Amerks were second in the division heading into the week and also saw Head Coach Chris Taylor return behind the bench. After starting the year as an assistant in Buffalo under Ralph Krueger, it would be interesting to see if he could continue the fast start to the year that the Amerks had under Gord Dineen, who will now return to his role as an assistant coach.

Currently on a three game winning streak, Rochester looked to continue this streak on home ice in their second meeting against Hartford. Andrew Oglevie (5) got his team off to a fast start, giving the Amerks a lead just 22 seconds after the opening faceoff and would stand as the lone goal of the opening period.

Tyler Randell scored his second of the year at the 8:47 mark of the second and doubled Rochester’s lead as they ended forty minutes of play leading 2-0, along with building a 29-17 lead in shots on goal. The third period sealed the deal for the Amerks, as Scott Wilson (4,5) scored two goals, with his first coming on the power-play at the 5:30 mark of the third.

Wilson’s goals sealed the deal as Hartford was shutout and the Amerks won 4-0 for their fourth straight. Andrew Hammond made 25 saves in his second shutout and seventh win of the season. The Amerks headed to Binghamton looking for their fifth straight win on Saturday.

In what was their third meeting between these teams, the Amerks needed a quick start to build momentum on the road, and the captain Kevin Porter (5) kicked off the scoring a minute and a half into the game. However, the Devils tied the game off a Joey Anderson power-play goal, which was followed a couple of minutes later with Brandon Baddock giving Binghamton a 2-1 lead after the first. Despite the Amerks trailing, they started the second with Tyler Randell (3) scoring his second in as many games to tie the game at 2, and was followed under five minutes later by Eric Cornel (3) scoring off assists from Brett Murray and John Gilmour, who made his Amerks debut in this game.

Cornel’s goal gave Rochester a 3-2 lead after the second and would turn out to be the game-winner. Despite being outshot 19-7 in the third, Jonas Johansson made every save, and Andrew Oglevie (6) scored an empty-netter that sealed the deal for the Amerks’ fifth straight win.

Johansson made 34 saves in the win, earning his fifth win in ten games played.
Now in the midst of a five-game winning streak, the Amerks will host Toronto (29 pts) before traveling to Cleveland to take on the Monsters (22 pts). Friday’s matchup will be the first season meeting between the rivals, while Saturday’s game will be meeting #3 between the Amerks and Monsters, with both teams earning a win in their two matchups which were played at Blue Cross Arena. Rochester earned a 3-2 win in OT earlier this month, while Cleveland earned a 4-3 shootout win last month. Entering this week with a 12-3-1-2 record and 27 points, the Amerks currently sit in second, two points behind Toronto, adding greater emphasis on this week’s matchup. Continuing their winning streak into next week would surely place them at the top of their division at week’s end.
