Rochester Report: Week 10

After winning their last game against Cleveland, the Amerks headed into a stretch where the team plays four straight at home, which included back-to-back nights against the Charlotte Checkers. However, they would kick off the week against Toronto on Wednesday in an effort to surpass them in the division standings as they look to take advantage of this current homestand.

December 4: vs. Toronto (W 4-0)

The Amerks kicked off their five-game homestand with a matchup against Toronto with the hope of building momentum. Zach Redmond (3) opened the scoring just over a minute into the game on the power play.

Pascal Aquin, with his first of the year, doubled Rochester’s lead a couple minutes later, as the opening period ended with a two-goal lead and an over 2:1 edge in shots (13-6). After being sent down from the Sabres, Curtis Lazar (5) increased the Amerks’ lead to three at the 12:23 mark of the second, as they continued to earn ample scoring opportunities.

Casey Fitzgerald (2) scored the fourth and final goal of the game early in the third period, as they finished the game with a 31-20 shots advantage, as they earned a 4-0 shutout win over Toronto. Andrew Hammond stopped all 20 shots against the Marlies for his third shutout of the season, as the team prepares to host Charlotte in upcoming back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night.

December 6: vs. Charlotte (W 4-0)

Fresh off a shutout win in their last game, Rochester continued to produce offensively, with Sean Malone (5) scoring the lone goal of the first period with over three minutes remaining.

The second period, however, would provide different results, as Kevin Porter (6), Brady Vail (1) and Eric Cornel (4) would give the Amerks a 4-0 lead for the second consecutive game. Despite the score, the shot totals were close throughout, with both teams earning 20 shots on goal after two periods of play. No goals were scored in the third, as the Amerks earned their second consecutive shutout in as many games, winning 4-0 over the Checkers in their first of two meetings.

Jonas Johansson, the first star of the game, made 26 saves for his first career AHL shutout.

December 7: vs. Charlotte (L 3-1)

After earning shutouts in two straight games, the Amerks allowed their first goal in three games, when Julien Gauthier scored the first of two power-play goals in the period at the 7:27 mark. With a few minutes remaining in the first, Morgan Geekie scored to give Charlotte a two-goal lead at the first intermission. Although it took almost two full periods for Rochester to get on the board, Jean-Sebastian Dea (8) scored with under four minutes to go in the second, cutting their deficit in half.

While this game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, Max McCormick scored an empty netter with 1:03 to go in regulation that sealed the deal for a 3-1 Charlotte win. In his second regulation loss on the season, Andrew Hammond made 27 saves on 29 shots faced.

Earning two wins in three games represents another strong week for Rochester, as they now stand with 15 wins and 34 points in 23 games played. Their homestand will conclude Wednesday when they host Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (30 pts) before traveling to Laval, Quebec for two games against the Rocket (31 pts), who sit directly behind Rochester in their division. As they currently trail Toronto by three points for the division lead, looking to bounce back from this loss at home.

One of the most memorable Sabres games I ever attended was the line brawl against the Senators, which Buffalo won in a shootout, 6-5. I can't wait for the day when playoff hockey returns to Buffalo. I graduated with a Masters in Sport Administration, and a Bachelor's in Political Science & Communication Studies from Canisius College.
